S. African War Memorial

South African War Memorial

(Boer War Monument, Province House)

This monument commemorates the participation of Nova Scotian civilians in a genocidal war known as the Boer Wars or the South African War (1880-1881; 1889-1990). The wars were between imperial Britain and the white Afrikaners alongside local Indigenous and diasporic Black populations. In particular, the facades on this monument have been criticized by local activist El Jones for white-washing the Boer Wars and solely memorializing white pain and participation in genocide in the name of imperialism.
